CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent

CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent

On the 27th of May 2011, we were given an opportunity to conduct a handball coaching clinic for the students from CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent School. First and foremost we would like to thank the Handball Federation of Singapore (HFS) and Team Axis Pte Ltd for giving us this opportunity to provide the students with basic handball training before they participate in the National Inter-School Handball Tournament that will take place a week after.

We had 3 whole hours to work with them and we were very impressed with their determination and attitude to learn although most of them are from other sporting backgrounds and were playing handball for the first time.

We started the session by explaining all the basic rules and also did a couple of demonstrations to let them have an idea of how the game works. We then conducted a fun warm up game to get them started on handball. The girls were also tested on their ball handling, throwing, catching and etc and most of them did very well as they are either basketball or netball players, so the main challenge for us is for them to put their individual skills aside and work together as a team.

We then moved on to the 3 steps shooting drill as most of them do not know how to attempt a 3 step shot. We started by having them practice without the ball and gradually progressed to the actual shooting drill. After more practice they were attempting the 3 steps shots with ease and the goalkeeper for the day was having a hard time saving the ball.

Finally in the last hour, we did basic formation line up and arranged a match with quite a few time-outs to point out the positive and the negative aspects of their game. The girls took our advice seriously and started building up stronger attacks and amazed us with their tight and commanding defence system.

We then ended the session with an overall debrief and both of us are really proud of the girls for picking up all the techniques and skills very quickly, with excellent team spirit and also perseverance in learning the game. We as handball coaches were honestly impressed by these group of passionate girls. We wish them the very best for their tournament and it was a pleasure having a session with them.
